Hookah purge balls, small plastic or metal spheres, are crucial in modern hookah design, integrated into the purge valve as one-way valves. Their main purpose is to prevent base water from entering the hose when purging stale smoke. Blowing into the hose increases pressure, forcing the purge ball to seal the base opening, directing smoke out the valve instead of bubbling back into the water.
